Afeem, also spelled “afeen,” is a term used in Hindi and Urdu for opium. It is a potent narcotic substance derived from the opium poppy plant, Papaver somniferum.
What is Opium?
Opium is the dried, milky latex or sap that seeps out from incisions made in the unripe seed pods of the opium poppy. This latex is collected by hand and then air-dried, forming a dark, sticky, gum-like substance.
The reason opium is so powerful is because it contains a number of naturally occurring alkaloids, including morphine and codeine. These alkaloids are what give opium its pain-relieving and euphoric properties
